Frequently asked questions

How much does a concrete driveway cost in Oakland?

National figures published by HomeGuide for 2026 put a concrete driveway at $6 to $15 per square foot, or $2,400 to $8,600 for a 2-car driveway. Those are not our quotes. Slope, access, removal and the City permit shape an Oakland price, and we give it in writing after measuring.

Do I need a permit to replace my driveway in Oakland?

For the part that crosses the curb and sidewalk, yes. Oakland requires a Curb, Gutter, Sidewalk permit from OakDOT, issued only to licensed contractors. Flat concrete on your own lot is generally exempt from a building permit under the state code.

Who is responsible for the sidewalk in front of my house?

The property owner, under state law and Oakland Municipal Code section 12.04.380. The City is responsible where an official City tree caused the damage. Oakland also requires a Sidewalk Compliance Certificate before a property is sold.

How long before I can drive on new concrete?

About a week for cars and about a month for heavy vehicles. Walking is usually fine after one to two days.

Can you pour concrete in winter in Oakland?

Yes. It rarely freezes here, so winter work goes ahead between storms. We do not pour in steady rain, and we keep covers ready.

How much deposit can a contractor ask for in California?

No more than $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract price, whichever is less, under the Contractors State License Board rules for home improvement contracts.

How long before I can use new concrete?

You can usually walk on it after 1-2 days and drive on it after about 7 days. It keeps gaining strength for about a month.

Do you remove the old concrete?

Yes. Tear-out and haul-away are part of our quote when a replacement is needed.

Can cracked concrete be repaired?

Small cracks and surface damage can often be repaired or resurfaced. Slabs that have sunk or broken up usually need to be replaced. We tell you which applies.

Do I need a permit for concrete work in Oakland?

Driveway approaches, sidewalks and structural slabs often need a permit. We check the rules for your address.
