A pool deck has to be safe when wet, comfortable under bare feet and sloped so splash water and rain run away from the pool edge and the house. In the Oakland area most pools are in the hills and over in the warmer valleys beyond them. Many decks there are decades old, cracked by clay movement and patched more than once.
For a new deck we use a textured finish: a light broom, a salt finish, exposed fine aggregate or a stamped pattern with grip added to the sealer. Lighter colors stay cooler in the sun. Joints are placed to line up with the pool shape, and a flexible joint goes between the deck and the pool coping so the two can move separately.
An older deck that is sound can be resurfaced with a coating made for pool surrounds. A deck that has sunk, tilted toward the pool or broken up needs the bad sections removed and repoured on a compacted base. On hillside pools we look closely at the downhill edge, where fill tends to settle.
Pool decks in Oakland: common questions
Can you resurface my pool deck or must it be replaced?
If the slab is solid, level and only worn or stained, resurfacing works well. If panels have dropped, rock underfoot or have wide cracks, those sections should be replaced first.
What finish is least slippery?
A broom, salt or fine exposed aggregate finish gives reliable grip. Smooth sealed surfaces are the slick ones, so we avoid them around water.
Do you work around an existing pool?
Yes. We protect the water and the coping, cover the pool during demolition and keep slurry out of it.
