Staining colors concrete without hiding it. Acid stains react with the slab and give mottled, earthy tones. Water-based stains and dyes offer a wider and more even range of colors. Either way the result is translucent, so the character of the slab, including its marks and repairs, shows through.
Preparation is most of the job. The surface has to be clean, bare and able to absorb. Old sealer, paint, glue and oil are removed by grinding or stripping. On Oakland floors that sit low or against a hillside we check for moisture first, because damp coming up through a slab will cloud or lift a sealer.
Stain works indoors on loft, shop and basement floors, and outdoors on patios, porches and walks. Outdoor stain fades slowly in the sun and under foot traffic and needs resealing from time to time. We always do a test patch on your slab before committing to a color.
Concrete staining in Oakland: common questions
Can you stain my old patio?
Usually, if the concrete is sound and can be cleaned back to a bare surface. Cracks and patches will still be visible as part of the look.
How long does stained concrete last?
The color itself is long lasting. The sealer over it wears and needs renewing, more often outdoors and in heavy traffic.
Will the color match the sample exactly?
No. Every slab takes stain differently, which is why we test a small area of your own concrete first.
